Interview record of Martin King--Part A

Today I heard one of the presenter, Cao Wei, she said that there is a huge difference in Chinese student and American student, because the class in China is always very quiet, although the Chinese students work harder and spend longer time, actually they just be quiet and do not tend to shoot questions to the teacher or the presenter, do you agree that students of DHU also have this problem?

I’ve been visiting DHU for several years, so I think we try to encourage students to think about their answers and to question their professor asks. I know in the past, the tradition had been accepted that what the professor says must be correct, but I think there are always differences in opinions. In North America and in Europe, we want to encourage students to be independent thinkers, and therefore not always agree with their professors. And I know probably this is not acceptable in Chinese but nevertheless there is always good idea to encourage students to ask questions and to be more independent.

Can you have any advice to our students especially the undergraduate students?

it is a little difficult for undergraduate students, there are many students in the same class, so it is difficult for everyone to ask questions, I think at the graduate level, may be that is when one can start an idea that you are now a graduate student and an independent thinker, and be able to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of what the professor says, because your professor is not always 100 percent right, we all have own opinions and own biases, so you must not accept that everything I say as perfectly true, and that is a very difficult thing. But I think that helps undergraduate level. so to the students who want to go abroad, I think this is main influences to work on is to become independent and not feel shy about ask questions I understand culturally that lies difficult.

About three years ago, there is a biomaterial conference, I heard you give a talk then? (That’s right) Is there any difference or improvement during this past three years?

well, I think this is true that there is much more emphasis now on the research, because in 2006, it was not well funded, faculty members were not focused as they keep now. So with bringing more research funding and to get more research conferences organized, that means faculty members and graduate students have a specific project to work on with focus to complete their pieces of work for this deadline date so this fiber society meeting, we know they had to validate for this morning, whatever we were going to present. So it gives a lot more emphasis to complete the work and progress. So I see a much fast progression now and expansion of what we were doing three years ago. For example, in the institute of biotechnology, there is no longer institute now it’s part of chemical engineering, so it’s becoming integrated more into the teaching and research ability of the university. I think this is very encouraging. So I think there is a lot of progress and expansion of the programmes and it gives a creative new faculty members and gives them to do more research with more graduate students.

And I heard that there is a contract between the DHU and the NCSU, there will be students of DHU every year, to go NCSU to do finish their Master’s degree.

Yes, we have placed exchange programmes that allow students to go between not just DHU and UCSU but other universities in United States and in Europe, where they can go to finish their studies. So that provide them a more international flavor experience for the graduate students at DHU, which is appreciated, so there are students who are able to learn the language and practice the language by going abroad and studying and learning their other way of doing science and engineering.

So you think that English, the language is very important?

Yes, that is very true. Let me explain. In Canada we have two languages. They got equally important, French and English. And I have lived and worked at a French speaking university, so all the instructions for the undergraduate level is in French, however, we know at the research level, the international language is English, so we ensure that all our graduate students understand English, speak English, and use English at their scientific and engineering research. And I think that is true for Chinese students and for other students, to work on their English. if you can, that you can bring advantage, when you are in the world of research, international research.
